How to use charcoal
For bakhour and oud on a burner
-
Light the charcoal disc
Use a lighter or a match until it glows all over.
-
Place the disc on the burner
Use tongs: the disc gets hot quickly.
-
Wait for a layer of ash
Once a thin layer of ash covers the disc and its smoke settles, it is ready.
-
Place bakhour or oud on the disc
Start with a small amount, and add a little whenever the scent fades. If it burns too fast or smells bitter, wait for the disc to calm down, or move the bakhour to its edge.
Safety and storage
- Never leave a lit burner unattended.
- Keep it away from children and fabrics.
- Never burn it in a closed room, and air the room after use.
- Keep it in its closed pack, in a dry place away from moisture, so it keeps lighting quickly.
Questions about charcoal
How long does a disc burn?
It depends on the size: about an hour for the small disc, about an hour and a quarter for the medium, and up to two hours for the large. Each size's burn time is in its card above.
When do I put the bakhour on the disc?
When the whole disc glows, a thin layer of ash covers it, and its smoke settles. Put on earlier, the bakhour's scent mixes with the smell of the lighting.
Why is there a smell and sparks when I light the disc?
This is normal for quick-lighting charcoal, and comes from the material that makes it light quickly. It lasts only a short time: wait until it settles and a thin layer of ash covers the disc, then add the bakhour.
Does it need a special burner?
Any heat-safe burner will do. An electric burner needs no charcoal.
Is charcoal smoke harmful?
Smoke from burning charcoal can harm health, more so in closed spaces. So use charcoal in a well-ventilated place and in moderate amounts, do not breathe its smoke directly, and never leave it burning unattended. People with asthma or allergies should ask their doctor before using it.
How do I store the charcoal?
In a dry place away from moisture, closing the pack after each use: damp slows its lighting.
What do I do with the disc after use?
Leave it in the burner until it goes out and cools completely, then throw away the ash.
